When Drone Content Actually Makes Sense for a Brand
Aerial footage almost always looks impressive, which is exactly why it gets requested even when it isn't the right tool for the job. Before adding a drone to a brief, it's worth asking what it's actually there to communicate — not just whether it would look good.
When it genuinely adds value
- Scale and location matter to the story. A venue, a property, a large event or a production facility often can't be understood from ground level the way it can from above.
- You're selling a place, not just a product. Real estate, hospitality, tourism and events are the categories where aerial footage most directly supports the actual decision a viewer is making.
- You need a genuine "wow" opening. A sweeping aerial shot can be an effective way to open a brand film or a campaign, when it's followed by content that actually delivers on the promise of that opening.
- Movement itself is part of the message. Following a vehicle, a route, or the flow of a large space in motion is something a drone captures naturally in a way ground footage can't replicate.
When it's probably not worth it
- The story is about people, not places. A testimonial, a product demo, or anything that relies on human connection loses more than it gains from being filmed from a distance.
- It's being added out of habit, not purpose. If a drone shot doesn't clearly serve the message, it usually reads as decoration — impressive for three seconds, forgotten immediately after.
- The location itself isn't visually distinct. An aerial shot of a generic building or a small indoor space rarely earns its place in the edit.
How to decide for your project
A useful test: if you removed the drone shot, would the video lose something the story actually needed — or just something nice to look at? If it's the former, it's probably worth it. If it's the latter, that budget is usually better spent elsewhere in the production. If you're not sure which one applies to your brief, tell us about your project and we'll give you an honest read.
